Liposuction
The purpose of cosmetic surgery is to improve peopleis appearance as much
as possible. Patients expecting a miraculous transformation in the way they
look will probably be disappointed. Plastic surgery is a marriage of science
and art, yet some factors that affect the final result (the healing process,
for example) can not be controlled completely or predicted accurately by
either the surgeon or the patient. It is therefore impossible to guarantee
an exact result. The result of liposuction is more predictable for some
patients than for others. It can be affected by the patient’s general health
and physical condition, the elasticity and nature of the skin, “cellulite”,
the underlying bone structure, heredity, hormones and various other factors.
The purpose of liposuction is to improve the shape of the body. Much of
what determines the size and shape of our bodies is inherited from our parents.
Our genes control the way our fat cells are distributed in the body just
the way they control the color of our eyes or hair. This implies that some
fat deposits are due to heredity, and exercise or dieting won;t make them
go away. It is these that are the best candidates for liposuction, although
excess fat beneath the skin on just about any part of the body can be removed
in this way. The areas most often treated are hips, thighs, stomach and
chin for women, and chin, chest and midriff for men.
To understand how liposuction can effectively and permanently change the
form of certain parts of the body, we should know that we were born with
a certain number of fat cells. When we gain weight these cells get bigger,
and when we lose weight they get smaller. Everything that reduces the number
of cells thus has a permanent effect. Liposuction does exactly that.
