Articles and TV programs on plastic surgery have become increasingly common in recent years, so naturally the public has become better informed. But it is usually only a small portion of the subject that is taken up, and most people therefore believe that plastic surgery deals primarily with operations to improve people’s appearance. This is not correct. Aesthetic surgery accounts for less than half of plastic surgery procedures.
Another common source of misunderstanding is the term plastic surgery”. Many people associate it with plastic. It is true that artificial materials such as silicone are used in plastic surgery, but these have nothing to do with the name.
The word comes from the Greek plastikos, which means to mold or form. The term “plastic surgery” was coined in 1798 by Desault, and entered general use in 1893 with the publication of a book: “Handbuch der Plastichen Chirurgie”, by Zeis.
Plastic surgery operations are mostly a matter of moving and shifting tissues to create new forms. In a face lift the skin is shifted upward. In repair of burns, the damaged area is re-formed with skin transferred from other parts of the body.
History
The history of plastic surgery has more than curiosity value. It also provides some perspective on human progress and human ideals. We know that many characteristics are hereditary and not simply the product of the environment and age we live in. It is also important for us to understand how we have been influenced by history. Or, as Santayana said in the 1800s, Those who can not remember history are condemned to repeat it.” Churchill also emphasized the importance of perspective in a speech to the British Surgeons Society when he said, “The further back you look, the further forward you can see.”

We know today that surgical procedures such as trepanning (making a hole in the skull) were performed as early as 10,000 BC. Specialized surgery, such as removal of cataracts, could be done as early as the 1950s also BC! We also know that something like modern plastic surgery was being performed as early as 600 BC, when Susruta Sarnita was repairing damaged noses in India. After that, there is no trace of plastic surgery’s development until the late 1400s. At that time Antoni Branca, a Sicilian, was using tissue from the arms to repair damaged ears or lips. An Italian named Gaspare Tagliacozzi (1545-1599) is regarded as the founder of modern plastic surgery. In 1597 he published a treatise on his life’s work – he repaired damaged noses with bits of tissue from the arm. He wrote: “We repair and fix body parts that
